About Mukundra
Mukundra Safari is an independent visitor guide for jungle drives inside Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve — Rajasthan’s third tiger reserve after Ranthambore and Sariska. It is written for Kota families, weekend travellers and anyone who wants Hadoti forest without pretending this is East Africa.
NTCA records: constituted in 2013. Core includes Mukundra National Park, Darrah Wildlife Sanctuary, Jawahar Sagar Sanctuary and part of National Chambal Sanctuary from Garadia Mahadev to Jawahar Sagar Dam. Total area 759.99 sq km (core 417.17 + buffer 342.82) across Kota, Bundi, Chittorgarh and Jhalawar.
The name comes from two almost parallel flat-topped Vindhyan hills, about 80 km from the Chambal towards the Kalisindh. Champion & Seth dry deciduous forest — dhok, khair, salai — covers the rocky slopes. This is why leopard, sloth bear and deer belong here more naturally than a savanna postcard.
Tigers were restored through official translocations. The reserve is a restoration landscape, not a guaranteed-sighting park. Plan the gypsy for hills, gorge light and ungulates. If a tiger crosses the road, that is extra.
This site does not sell government permits and does not take safari payment. Book only through the Forest Department / Field Director’s office in Kishorepura, Kota.
Why Kota people keep coming
You can sleep in the city and still make a dawn gypsy. That is rare for a tiger reserve in Rajasthan.
The landscape is specific: dhok on rock, two parallel hills, and a river gorge — not a copy of Ranthambore’s fame.
Visitor pressure is usually lighter. You watch forest, not a queue of twenty gypsies around one animal.
