Protected areas

Mukundra National Park

Notified in 2012, later folded into the tiger reserve. The namesake Vindhyan hill ranges — two almost parallel flat-topped ridges that give Mukundra its name.

Darrah Wildlife Sanctuary

Historic sanctuary of the Kota forest division; now core tiger habitat. This is the block Kota still calls “jungle” — dry deciduous slopes and leopard country.

Jawahar Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary

Reservoir and hill forest linked to the Chambal system. Water and slope together make this stretch different from inland dhok forest.

National Chambal Sanctuary

The stretch from Garadia Mahadev to Jawahar Sagar Dam is part of Mukundra’s core. Mugger, and on the river itself gharial and otter, belong to this landscape. Stay behind railings at the gorge.
